The Starting Point: A Frog That Could Not Recover

Watch closely for warning signs that call for professional help: worsening lameness, heat and a strong digital pulse, swelling, pus from a new opening, significant bleeding, a rapidly deepening crack, or tissue that looks cauliflower-like and does not respond to standard thrush care. Those signs can point to something more serious than routine thrush.

Keep the Next Flare-Up From Starting

Once the hoof is healthy, maintenance is easier than recovery. Pick feet daily, especially after wet turnout. Keep stalls clean and dry. Check the central sulcus, not just the broad surface of the frog. Stay on a dependable farrier schedule, and do not ignore a smell simply because the horse is still willing to move.
